Cover Story for Summer 2022 Exhibition in Seoul -  About Jumeoni, Korean Pouchs

This is a cover story of the exhibition, < JOHH Korean Traditional Embroidery, Summer 2022 Exhibition in Seoul >  introducing a variety of Jumeoni(small pouches) with embroidery.

What image comes to mind first to the Korean people today when they think of the word, “Jumeoni?” This question is based on the polysemous Korean word, Jumeoni, which has both meaning of pockets and small pouches. And the answer would be pockets on clothes rather than pouches. Otherwise, the Korean in the past must pick a small pouch doubtlessly because there was no pocket on their traditional costume until the Western culture came into the Korean peninsula in the late 19th century. Instead of pockets, all kinds of portable pouches were developed.

However, every Korean describes the only one picture about “Bok-Jumeoni” even in this century. One small round pouch with strings around the pleated opening, like a fabric bucket bag of these days. Bok-Jumeoni literally means a “Fortune Pouch,” which was believed to bring health and wealth. This symbolic pouch is so familiar to the public that everybody knows it, and its terminological name is “Duru-Jumeoni” according to its round shape. There is rectangle-shaped pouch, too, which is called “Gui-Jumeoni.” When categorizing pouches according to usages, the list of pouch names will not end; Yak-Jumeoni(medicine pouch), Hyang Jumeoni(perfume pouch), Buut-Jumeoni(brush pouch), Sujeo-Jumeoni(spoon and chopsticks pouch), Beoseonbon-Jumeoni(socks pattern pouch), and so on.

Pouches were usually decorated with embroidery, gold foil, strings, charms or whatever makes them more attractive. The pouches used by royal families are eye-catching and unique. They were made by authorized artists in the court. The court painter drew designs, the court embroiderer did the needlework, and the certified sewer made the pouches. The royal embroidery was represented by sophisticated stitches using gold and silver thread as well as fine silk thread and jewels such as pearls and jades. So, these small, elaborated pouches look more like art pieces or fashion accessories than practical items.

Almost of all the remained embroidery artifacts are from Joseon Dynasty, and most of them are from late 19th century. So, the previous ones are only imagined by written documents and traditional costume trends in history. Even before Joseon Dynasty, the embroidery for royal courts was presumed to be highly detailed with complex stitch techniques using satin thread and a lot of gold materials, and the shapes of pouches varied as time went by.

There must have been numerous different pouch designs and embroidery decorations a long time ago, but let’s keep our eyes on what exists today. Thanks to the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the ancestors, the historical artifacts including embroidery, pouches and paper pattern for embroidery have been the constant source of inspiration. The crafts in this exhibition also are inspired by the antique embroidery; some are replica artifacts with a very little change and the others are new art creations based on the traditional design and techniques. Sometimes it is hard to divide them only into two categories because the traditional works are related to each other somehow and somewhere.

As layers of time turn to an era and a gigantic collection of art pieces becomes an art trend, the traditional things are made with each artwork in every single moment. There is someone who triggers the beginning of new era, someone who brings the changes to the peak, and someone who close the era with perfection. And they are all connected in chronological order while each of them is just doing what they want to. The next generation will call that series of behaviors tradition. It is difficult to figure out where the contemporary Korean embroidery art is, though, it is certain that every step made by every stitch will keep moving forward to become a new tradition.
