Finding Symbols of Longevity

Living a long and healthy life is the greatest wish of humanity regardless of time. Our ancestors embroidered various symbols of longevity on their goods in everyday use, like modern people put their personal health data in mobile phones and check them every day. Nobody can be sure if the auspicious symbols could actually have people’s lives healthier, but it seems certain that enjoying everyday full of the beautiful and meaningful ornaments could make their lives richer. Now, Let’s find symbols of longevity in embroidery.

거북[Geobuk] Turtles

Typical symbols of longevity include animals, plants, and nature and these are mostly drawn together in one canvas. Turtles, cranes, and deer often show up in longevity myths, and turtles really have long lifespans. Turtles and Hyunmu(Black tortoise, a mythical creature and a guardian of the north direction) look almost the same, so turtles are considered to be the sacred animals like dragons and phoenixes. Cranes and deer are usually described with hermits in the celestial world, so they represent eternal life. The animals are mostly drawn in pairs; male and female.

사슴[Saseum] Deer

Pine tree and bamboo symbolize not only loyalty for their natural characteristics but also longevity for their long lifespans. When it comes to give just ten examples of symbols of long life, bamboo may not be included, yet it is usually depicted together with pine trees in a symmetrical position. Bulocho(Herb of eternal youth, actually it is a kind of funghi, Ganoderma lucidum) literally means anti-ageing herb that makes people stay young forever. This mysterious herb looks like a cloud on stem, which makes it more spiritual and sacred. Cranes and deer are often described with Bulocho in their mouths.

The sun and the moon, mountains and rocks are always there quietly looking at human affairs. Water and clouds are moving constantly by changing their forms from seawater, water vapor, clouds, rain, and groundwater again. This timeless cycle is one of God’s blessings in this world and the various colours filling the embroidered water and clouds are showing the brilliant history of this planet. The immobility of the sun and rocks and the mobility of water and clouds are all standing for the best wish for humanity.
