Embroidery Techniques
​은은한 광택이 도는 비단천 위에 두 가닥을 꼬아 만든 비단실(꼰사)로 한 땀 한 땀 놓아간 자리를 따라가보면 모든 바늘땀들이 각자 자신의 자리를 잘 찾아간 것으로 보인다. 과하지도 부족하지도 않게 적당한 간격과 길이를 맞추어 놓인 바늘땀은 그 놓인 모습과 방식에 따라 다음과 같은 이름으로 불린다.

It looks like every stitch made of two-strand silk thread - Kkon-sa(twisted thread) - has found its suitable place on the silk fabric with soft luster.
Here are some Korean traditional embroidery techniques named by characteristics of each of them according to the length and interval of stitches.
Let’s take a close look at Korean embroidery techniques.




1. 평수[Pyeong-su] Satin stitch
연속적이고 일관된 방향성을 가진 땀으로 좁은 면을 채우는 기법이다.
A series of stitches are close together in parallel lines evenly to cover an small area completely.
2. 이음수[Ieum-su] Stem stitch
앞과 뒤의 바늘땀들이 이어지며 밧줄처럼 꼬인 형태의 부드러운 선을 만드는 기법이다. 나뭇가지나 줄기를 표현하거나 테두리를 두르는 데에 사용된다.
Layers of stitches create thin and smooth lines to be used to outline some areas or form stems, branch, etc.
3. 씨앗수[Ssiat-su] French knot stitch
씨앗처럼 작은 알갱이 모양의 수를 놓는 기법이다. 꽃술이나 작은 동물의 눈을 장식하거나 면을 채우는 데에 쓰인다.
Small three-dimentional bumps are made by winding thread several times around a needle, which used to shape stamens, eyes or fill up an area.
4. 가름수[Gareum-su] Fishbone stitch
나뭇잎이나 깃털처럼 중심선을 기준으로 반을 갈라 각각 대칭 방향의 평수를 채우는 기법이다. 
Dividing a pattern into two parts and filling them symmetrically helps to form leaves feather shapes.
5. 솔잎수[Solip-su] Pine leaf stitch
여러 가닥의 선으로 솔잎이나 잡초 등을 표현하는 기법이다.
Multiple lines of stitches are positioned mostly in a circle or a fan shape to make pine leaves.
6. 자릿수[Jarit-su] Brick stitch
긴 땀과 짧은 땀을 반복하여 돗자리를 짜는 듯이 규칙적으로 면을 채우는 기법이다. 넓은 면을 채우거나 색을 섞는 데에 쓰인다.
A series of repeated stitches is completing a wide area or making shades. Its texture is similar to a brick pattern or a woven mat.
7. 자련수[Jaryoen-su] Long and short stitch
긴 땀과 짧은 땀을 불규칙적으로 놓아 자연스럽게 면을 채우는 기법이다.
Irregular long and short stitches are completing a wide area or making natural shades.
8. 징금수[Jinggeum-su] Couching stitch
금사나 아주 굵은 실 등 직접 바느질하기 어려운 재료를 원단 위에 두고 다른 실로 고정시키는 기법이다.
Unsawable materials, something hard to be sewn by itself or any thread can be fastened on fabric by using other sewing thread.
