“Naturally dyed, artfully stitched, and culturally tied"
A duo exhibition by Heehwa Jo & Sara Cook
“An artistic dialogue between a Korean embroiderer and a British sewer.”
Naturally dyed, artfully stitched, and culturally tied brings together two artists whose practices are deeply rooted in Korea’s textile heritage.
London-based embroidery artist Heehwa Jo and Brighton-based textile artist Sara Cook first connected in 2022. What began as a shared interest in Korean textile traditions quickly grew into a friendship and a creative partnership.
This exhibition celebrates that connection. All works are grounded in shared materials: fabrics and threads hand-dyed by Cook with natural dyes. From this foundation, each artist follows her own path. Jo embroiders fine silk with threads of colour and gold, building texture and meaning through each stitch, while Cook creates bojagi, layering translucent cloths into luminous geometric compositions.
The result is a conversation in thread and fabric — a meeting point of two practices, two voices, and two friends, bound together by tradition and the act of making.
